From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein Document Release is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release

However, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.

“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.

The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
